Mr. Mike and Virginia McCartney and Mr. Joey Pierson each had areas of Auburn Arena named and dedicated to their generous support of Auburn Athletics and specifically the men’s basketball program. Tigers Unlimited Foundation held naming ceremonies for the families prior to the Auburn vs. Arkansas game on Saturday.
“We deeply appreciate the loyalty and generosity of Mike and Virginia McCartney and Joey Pierson,” Director of Athletics Jay Jacobs said. “It was an honor for all in attendance to be part of the dedication of the Mike and Virginia McCartney Atrium at Auburn Arena and the Joey Pierson Family Courtside Lounge. Their generous gifts will help take Auburn basketball to new heights. Auburn is a special place because of the leadership and support shown time and again by longtime donors like Joey and the McCartneys, who give because they love Auburn and they believe in our student-athletes.”
The Auburn Arena Atrium is now named the Mike and Virginia McCartney Atrium at Auburn Arena. The McCartney’s made a significant gift to the Men’s basketball program – one of the largest gifts in the program’s history, in a show of support for Coach Bruce Pearl. The McCartney’s gift will be used to enhance the men’s basketball program by providing funding for travel, recruiting, and facility upgrades.
“I’m overwhelmed with honor. I’m just proud to be part of this because I know how much Mike loves Auburn,” Virginia McCartney said. “When we get on the highway from Gadsden, Mike turns into a different person, a happier person. We get onto campus and we feel welcomed. We feel like a part of everything going on down here. We are really honored.”
A long-time supporter of Auburn University, McCartney has served on the Auburn University Board of Trustees; was a founding director and longtime president of athletics’ Tigers Unlimited Foundation; and he has served in leadership roles with the Samuel Ginn College of Engineering. The McCartneys are inaugural members of the Tigers Unlimited Foundation’s Oaks Society - the most prestigious giving society within Auburn Athletics.
Auburn Arena’s Courtside Lounge will now be named the Joey Pierson Family Courtside Lounge. Pierson’s generous gift to Auburn Athletics will be used to enhance Auburn athletic facilities and provide student-athletes unique opportunities. A portion of his gift will be used to fund an international educational and playing opportunities for the men’s basketball team.
“The Auburn family has been very important to me. My dad taught me to love Auburn, and when I came to school here, I realized was that giving back was going to be very important,” Pierson said. “It is something I wanted to teach my children, Abby and Nathan. What I hope they see is that wherever they get to in life, giving back is incredibly important.
“(Having his name on the Courtside Lounge) It’s not usually who I am, to be in front of people. I’m not a very public person, but I hope others see that it’s important to me and do the same. It’s good for me because the word family is in the name. This is for my children and my parents, like my mother Terry, and friends who have become family.”
A long-time supporter of Auburn University, Pierson serves on the Harbert College of Business’ School of Accountancy’s Advisory Board and serves as a Director of athletics’ Tigers Unlimited Foundation. Through his generous support, he is also a member of the Tigers Unlimited Foundation’s Oaks Society – the most prestigious giving society within Auburn Athletics.
