AUBURN - The Auburn University men's basketball team is in a game worthy of the Final Four, but a victory here doesn't mean a trophy or a national championship. In this challenge, winning means saving lives. The Auburn Tigers are part of the Coaches vs. Cancer program, teaming up with the American Cancer Society in the fight of a lifetime.

As part of Coaches vs. Cancer, the Tigers are participating in the Pledge Point Attack. This program invites fans to pledge a specific dollar amount for every point shot made by the Tigers this season. Money raised from the Pledge Point Attack funds the American Cancer Society's research initiatives, patient services and educational campaigns that encourage healthy lifestyle choices, like avoiding tobacco, staying active and eating a healthy diet.

The 2008 Coaches vs. Cancer Silent Auction will be held Saturday, Jan. 19 at Beard-Eaves-Memorial Coliseum. Former Auburn basketball players will compete in the annual legends game at 1:15 pm followed by the Auburn- Ole Miss at 4 pm. The Coliseum doors open at 1 pm, and the auction items will be on display on the concourse at that time.

Cancer is a tough competitor, but the Auburn University Athletics Department is committed to helping beat it. They are excited to be able to support the American Cancer Society's efforts through this program and hope that fans will rally for such an important cause.

Since the alliance of the National Association of Basketball Coaches and the American Cancer Society in 1993, the Coaches vs. Cancer program has delivered lifesaving messages to thousands of young Americans about staying cancer-free.

The American Cancer Society is the nationwide, community-based, voluntary health organization dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem by preventing cancer, saving lives and diminishing suffering from cancer, through research, education, advocacy and service.
