Auburn Quotes

Auburn 86, Wofford 76

Saturday, December 16, 2006

Head Coach Jeff Lebo

"It was a good win for us. I can see why they beat Cincinnati and should have beaten NC State. What a difference one guy can make for a team, because (Drew) Gibson has been out. He played five games and they (Wofford) were a different team with him in the game. I thought that he was terrific tonight getting to the hole. He is strong, crafty and he has some speed. We had a hard time guarding him. The hard part about it was that they played five shooters out there. They shot it well and so did we. We needed to win this game. I thought that Quantez (Robertson) was terrific. He made two big three point shots late in the second half that gave us momentum. They are a good basketball team, but they have struggled lately. Without Gibson, they have (Shane) Nicholls who is a pretty good shooter and player, but Gibson is the guy that makes them go. Matt Heramb did a nice job coming in off of the bench early. He gave us seven points in the first half, and did some good things in there for us. We did a good job, for the most part, on the glass against them.

We will take it a move on."

On starting slow in the second half...

"We were sloppy coming out, I don't know why. We just weren't alive for whatever reason. We passed the ball for the most part fairly well, and 24 assists in the game is a lot. We got good balance at the end of the day. We had five guys in double figures and shot the ball at a high percentage which we needed to do. We made free throws at the end of the game which was key for us. They are a hard team to play against when they are making their shots. (Corey) Godzinski and (Matt) O'Connor are excellent three point shooters and that is hard to defend, especially when you have a guard in there as good as Gibson getting to the hole. When they get all of their players back, they are going to be even better. Mike (Young) is a good friend of mine and he's had some bad luck. I don't know if I want to play them anymore though."

On Quantez Robertson...

"He is tough. He is not a one call man. He is a dead on shooter from the perimeter. In games when you need him, he seems to have the ability to put them in because of his toughness. He is not afraid to take one. He was getting a little too far spread with his free throws this past week, but it has changed. He is just a player, he is a tough guy. He almost had a triple double today with eight rebounds, eight assists and 14 points. He is just an all-around guy and you have to have him on the floor."

On Kelvin Lewis...

"He looked a little shaky coming up the floor with the ball and he fell down one time. I don't want to rush him, but I want him to feel confident getting back. I just didn't feel that he looked comfortable when he was in there. Hopefully when we get a couple of days of practice in there, he can play a little more against Tennessee State."

Sophomore Guard Rasheem Barrett

On coming out slow after half time...

"Basically, coach just told us it was an issue of maturity.  We need to grow up a little bit more and we're going to be alright as the season progresses."

On Quantez Robertson making big shots at the end...

"We all know Quantez can make those shots.  He proves himself in practice.  He proves to his teammates and the coaches that he can make those shots.  Whenever Quantez got the ball and I saw his hands going up, I knew he was going to make the shot.

On allowing Wofford to stay in the game until the end...

"It felt good to come back and win.  Right before the game, coach said he had a bad taste in his mouth from the game Frank (Tolbert) played in two years ago.  Hopefully we got the bad tastes out of coach and Frank's mouths.  It was a great game for us."

Junior Guard Frank Tolbert

On allowing Wofford to stay in the game until the end...

"It's disappointing that we got down and let them get back in the game.  Still, we have to fight through that and find a way to win, which we did today."

On Wofford keeping the game tied throughout...

"Let's put it this way, those guys can shoot.  You give them a little bit of space, and the ball is going up.  They looked good.  I have to give them credit."

"They have a good point guard in Gibson.  He broke the defense down and would find an open man, and that's something we have to go back and work on.  When it comes to our one-on-one defense, we have to keep our man in front of us.  There is a lot of one-on-one going on in practice."

Wofford Quotes

Head coach Mike Young

On taking the lead in the second half...

"I didn't think we played well defensively.  I didn't think we played well on either end.  I thought our zone helped us a lot in some potions.  I told them that we found ourselves down here two years ago in worse shape than this, down by 15 points.  I told them that we were going to be fine.  We had a great start in the second half.  We would be in great shape if we did the things that made us a good basketball team.  We certainly did that in the early part in the second half.  We have to be better on the defensive end.  Auburn played the No. 2 team in Pittsburgh a week ago and gave them everything they wanted.  We came in here and should have, could have won the basketball game.  Because we gave them too many easy baskets, we don't get out with a win.  That part I am discouraged with."

On Drew Gibson...

This team wants to do great things.  (Drew) Gibson makes us all a little bit better because of his penetration.  His ability to get different places with the ball, it allows (Junior) Salters and (Corey) Godzinski more time to get their jump shots off.  Godzinski was certainly good.  They continue to do nice things for our team"

Senior Forward Matt O'Connor

On the game against Elon...

"We came in here pretty confident.  We've been on a six-game losing streak, and we thought this would be a great time to get a good win.  We had about a week of practice coming into the game.  We have these last two games before break, and thought we would have a good chance to win.  Obviously we didn't put our defense together, and that is where we lost.  At the beginning of the year we beat Cincinnati, and that gave us some confidence.  We thought we could get another one, but I we'll just have to settle for one big win."

On the second half...

"We were really confident.  Two years ago, they came in at halftime down by 15 and came out with the win.  We knew that we were going to cut the lead, and that we weren't going to get that one basket to cut the lead by 10.  We just chipped away at it and had a couple of stops.  I think we might have worn out."
