AUBURN, Ala. -
The Auburn University men's basketball team dropped an exhibition game to Auburn University at Montgomery, 69-64 on Tuesday at Beard-Eaves-Memorial Coliseum in Auburn. The loss was the final tune-up for the Tigers before regular season play begins.
"AUM played and shot better than us at crucial times," head coach Jeff Lebo said. "We have a young and fragile group and this hurts our kid's confidence, but at least this game doesn't count against us."
Junior Frank Tolbert led the way for AU with 21 points and 10 rebounds. Sophomore Korvotney Barber added 16 rebounds and six boards, while junior Archie Miaway chipped-in 11 points.
Auburn found itself down by as many as seven early in the first half, but a 9-0 run gave the Tigers a 16-14 lead at the 9:37 mark. AU held a 34-32 lead at the half, led by Tolbert's 11 points.
The Senators began the second half with five unanswered points, but a Barrett trey ended the run. Auburn once again found itself down by nine midway through the second stanza (55-46) after a 9-0 run by AUM. Back-to-back AU three pointers cut the Senators' lead to three, only to see AUM extend the lead back to six.
The Tigers got to within one (63-62) on a dunk by Barrett and took its first lead since halftime on a Miaway jumper with 48 seconds left on the clock. AUM regained the lead at the 0:32 mark and buried four late free throws to seal the win.
Auburn will next be in action as it begins regular season play on Friday, Nov. 10 at home against Troy. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
