AUBURN -- Rob Chubb had a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds, freshman Jordan Price scored 11 points, making all four shots including three 3-pointers, and freshman Shaq Johnson added 10 points as the primarily newcomers White squad defeated the veterans Blue 38-36 in Auburn's 20-minute intrasquad scrimmage on Saturday in Auburn Arena.
"I am going to reserve the right for judgment when I see the tape, but the thing that I think everybody saw including the thing that I expect is that we have an opportunity to put the ball in the basket at a higher clip than we have in the past," said Auburn head coach Tony Barbee. "That is how you win games. You have to score points.
"We scored points and everybody had their moments, but I think everybody is walking out of here today as excited about the newcomers as I am."
Frankie Sullivan, who is down to 205 pounds after losing 15 during the offseason, had eight points, three rebounds, two assists and two steals. Seven-foot center Asauhn Dixon-Tatum added seven points and five rebounds while going 3-of-5 from the floor.
"That is great for us, but it was bad for the Blue squad today, but for our team as a collective group, it is great for us," said Sullivan, a member of the Blue, talking about the freshmen who made such a big impact playing for the White. "It lets us know that when we need a bucket to score, they can't just double me or Chubb because we have freshmen who are willing to take and hit big shots as you saw today and hopefully that carries over to the game.
"This scrimmage was good for us because we finally got a chance to get the crowd into it and not just practice, practice and practice."
Six-foot-9 freshman Jordon Granger
scored seven points, shooting 3-of-5 from the floor, including making his only 3-point attempt, while Josh Wallace
totaled six points, two rebounds and one steal.
Junior Shareif Adamu notched four points and six rebounds, all on the offensive glass, as Chris Denson added four points and two assists. KT Harrell, a Virginia transfer who will redshirt this season, had three points and three assists while Noel Johnson went 1-of-2 from 3-point range and scored three points.
As a team combined, Auburn shot 44.6 percent from the floor, including 36.8 percent from 3-point range, making 7-of-19. The Tigers had 19 offensive and 19 defensive rebounds and had 14 assists on the 29 baskets and only nine turnovers.
The White squad featured all newcomers in freshmen Johnson, Price, Greene Jr. and Granger along with juniors Dixon-Tatum and Harrell while the Blue consisted of Sullivan, Chubb, Payne, Wallace, Johnson and Adamu.
Auburn opens exhibition play Tuesday at 7 pm Central against Victory University in Auburn Arena. Admission is free.
