Auburn Quotes

Auburn 67, Arkansas 59

Head Coach Jeff Lebo

Opening statement...

"I thought we did a good job defensively for most of the game.  I thought we did a nice job on the glass.  We have been focusing on the two seconds that the ball has been in the air.  In SEC play, we have gotten beat there.  We are going to get beat there some, because we are not very big, but I thought we won that battle tonight.  We had 18 offensive rebounds in the game.  I thought Korvotney (Barber) was terrific on the glass, using his quickness against people that are much bigger.  Twelve and 14 against those big guys is a pretty good night's work.  I have been pleased with our practices.  The kids have stayed together and worked hard.  I thought yesterday they had a great practice.  It was a very physical, tough practice the day before the game.  We found a way to win, which is nice.  I don't know what the other people in the league did, but before we started the game I told them to just play hard."

On Auburn's rebounding advantage...

"Our quickness was to our advantage.  We got to the ball and to the glass fairly quickly, and they didn't shoot the ball very well either.  No team shot the ball particularly well.  We did a good job for the most part.  Beverley was able to get some points, but we did a good job on him.  We have done a good job on him the last two games.  They didn't seem to be able to get into a flow.  We mixed some defenses, and we played more man than I thought we were going to be able to play against them.  I thought our double teams on the big guys were pretty good.  We are still struggling some.  Rasheem (Barrett) and Quan (Prowell) are both still struggling some.  They went zero for eight.  We need those guys to get some confidence and get back in gear for next week.  It is going to be hard for us to win without those two playing well."

On Auburn's free throw shooting down the stretch...

"We have been better recently and more confident in our play.  It's just a confidence thing I think.  Korvotney (Barber) went four for seven, so I think he is getting more comfortable there.  A lot of times I don't have him in, but I kept him in a little longer than usual tonight."

Sophomore Forward Korvotney Barber

On the win...

"It feels good because the Western Division is still up and down. We are still in the mix for it. It was a big win tonight."

On rebounds...

"We have been working on boxing out the last couple of days in practice. We have been doing a drill, `war rebounding' where you box out the entire drill. It really helped us tonight. We really weren't thinking about rebounding, we were just worrying about boxing out and keeping the big guy off of the glass. We did a good job on the boards tonight."

Sophomore Forward Josh Dollard

On the win...

"It is a very important win. I can't even explain how important that it is. We really needed this win. Arkansas is a good team. They beat us at Arkansas and we really wanted to get our revenge on them. We lost four straight, and this got the monkey off of our backs a little bit. We need to stay focus, have a good practice tomorrow and do our job again at Alabama."

On practices...

"It's been like football practice. We had three straight days where we just did `war rebound.' The guards have been getting beat down and the big man has been getting beat down. People have been getting scratches. It has been tough. It helped us tonight."

On rebounds...

"Coach Lebo said that if you box out, you may not get the rebound, but all that matters is that your man didn't get the rebound. As long as we came out on top and out-rebounded them, it doesn't matter."

Junior Guard Frank Tolbert

On win...

"It is big. It gives us our confidence back, knowing that we can win. We still have a lot more games to play, and it gives us more confidence down the stretch that we can win."

On rebounds...

"I knew that we could out-rebound them, you just have to box out. It doesn't matter your size, you can box somebody out. We've been stressing about that this past week in practice. We finally did it tonight. We did it a little at the Georgia game, but we did it as a team tonight."

Visitor Quotes

Arkansas Coach Stan Heath

On the game...

"We certainly weren't the same team we were in our last game. Our start was very poor. They out hustled and out rebounded us. That's something that is atypical of how we want to play and what we want to do out there. The offensive rebounding was a major difference in the game. (Korvotney) Barber had six of them, but a lot of them came from the guards flying in there and us not doing a good job of boxing out like we should."

On Quantez Robertson's put-back before the half...

"It painted the whole picture of the first half. That was our achilles heel. We kept giving them extra opportunities to score the ball. Getting out rebounded by 12 is not the way we're supposed to play on the glass. We've been in the top of the league in rebounding, but today was a poor effort on the glass. You can't run if you don't rebound."

On Arkansas' perimeter shooting...

"We shot the ball really well last night at practice, even at our shoot around today. We got a lot of extra shooting in, but the shots just weren't falling for us. Some of that was the length they have on the defensive side of the ball, and some of them were clean looks that we had. Auburn did a good job of doubling our post players in the first half, and we didn't handle the situation very well. We had turnovers out of the double, but we did a much better job in the second half."

Junior Forward Charles Thomas

On how Auburn was able to out-rebound Arkansas ...

"I can't really say. They played hard and they wanted it more. I felt like I let my team down. I'm not criticizing anybody else; I felt like I didn't come out with the intensity it takes to play."

On having a poor game after playing well against Ole Miss...

"You really can't explain it. They just played harder and wanted it more. We made some bad plays, and that compounded our mistakes, but it's hard to play when the other team just wants it more."

Junior Guard Gary Ervin

On the game...

"Auburn played really hard. We keep making bad plays and that's why we lost the game. We can't worry about that now. We have a lot of things to work on. We just need to get back and work hard and get ready for the next game."

On why Arkansas shot so poorly from the field...

"Give Auburn credit, they played hard, but we just didn't knock down shots. That was it; sometimes the shots just don't go in.
