Auburn Player Quotes

Chris Denson, Junior, G

On lapses in defense...
"Bonehead plays and not talking, as you see they have a lot of easy dunks and that's just bonehead plays, it's not talking and communicating, and we fought defensively the last two games and just to come back and give such a poor performance today was just disappointing."

On Barbee's theme of disappointment...
"Yeah, for us to fight and give the fans what they got against Alabama and fight our way. I know we lost but still we fought against Kentucky and just to come out tonight and disappoint everybody, it's just disappointing all together."

On Barbee's thoughts/talk after the game...
"He just told us, where is the effort? Where is the fight at tonight that we showed the last two games and just thought that as a team the passion wasn't there. I don't know what it was. I guess everybody woke up on the wrong side of the bed this morning, but you can't have days like that, especially towards the end of the season like we are, this just can't happen. I'm not saying Arkansas is a bad team, but we gave one away."

On how the team is now compared to the beginning of the season...
"Definitely not where we said we were gonna be, but I think it's just all about the fight. At this point in time, we have got to get it. It's like grind time. Especially since we dug ourselves a hole, it's just go hard or go home right now. We don't have anything to lose so everybody just has to go in and fight. I know the seniors don't want to go out like this, so all the seniors have to step up, and the freshmen have to step up especially defensively we gave up 50 points in the second half and that's just inexcusable."

On frustration of everyone that's playing not showing fight and effort...
"That's very disappointing and for the people that are playing and fought the last two games and to see the people that are playing didn't fight tonight is just disappointing. It's not coach's fault. It's all on us and like he said, we just have to look in the mirror, everybody, myself included."

On turnovers being Arkansas defense or not strong with the ball...
"Not being strong with the ball, Arkansas presses, that's what they do, and I don't think they caused one turnover with their pressing. It's us just making bonehead plays."

Auburn Head Coach Tony Barbee

On what he told the team after the game...
"I told the guys how disappointed I was in their effort in the second half."

On playing tough in the first half...
"It is very disappointing. We got down by 10, but we fought our tails off. We fought our tails off together in the first half. In the second half, we didn't do it. It is disappointing."

On not having urgency...
"I just thought we played two of the best games we had all year. We didn't play great offensively against Alabama. We just collectively fought our butts off. Even though we didn't win at Kentucky, we collectively, together, fought our tails off. It is disappointing that we come in here for a half and not put forth a complete game. I wish I had the answers. If I did, it wouldn't happen."

On not starting Frankie Sullivan...
"I have to look at the tape to see what he did defensively for the entire game. He didn't play well offensively, obviously, with five turnovers. I still didn't get the results from not starting him. I am just searching with Frankie. He is putting way too much pressure on himself as a senior to finish. It happens with all seniors. They start to see the end of the tunnel and you can't play that way. You can't take that type of pressure individually. You have to lose yourself in the team and think about this team. Whenever he gets out of that fog, he will be able to help this team."

On going with a younger lineup in the future...
"I was disappointed in my veteran players. That is all that was. I told the guys that I am looking for a group that is willing to fight down the stretch. I don't care if it is the freshmen. I don't care if it is the seniors. I am just looking for a group that is willing to play with each other."

On not playing with Ashaun Dixon-Tatum and Rob Chubb down the stretch...
"Possibly. I have to watch the tape to see what we can do with that group."

On having 16 turnovers...
"We had 16 turnovers and not one of them was against the press. That tells you all you need to know. We had 10 between two seniors. That tells you all you need to know."

On where Rob Chubb is at mentally...
"I have no idea. I have no idea where he is at. He wasn't here tonight though."

On switching Rob and Ashaun out...
"Neither one was being consistent. It was more so defensively. Their job was to clog the paint, and they weren't doing it."

Arkansas Player Quotes

Marshawn Powell, Junior, F

On making three three-pointers in a row and turning a three point game to a 12 point...
"That was a big stretch for us. We executed the plays that Coach drew up and the shots were just falling."

On Rob Chubb getting an elbowing call and getting another possession, how it was a turning point in the game...
"That was a big turning point because it just shows you the level of frustration. We were just trying to keep him frustrated all night and not let him do what he did at our house, and it worked."

BJ Young, Sophomore, G

On what it took to get a road win tonight...
"Team effort, it took a lot of energy and sticking to it. We couldn't give up because we had to keep making plays every time they made a play. It got us out of here with a win."

On the fact that Arkansas won here last year and if it played any role in tonight's game...
"I think it did. We had a little extra confidence. Coming in, we knew it was not going to be easy because we went into double overtime with them in our place, and we just wanted to come in here and try to get a win. We needed it."

On the road problems getting into their heads...
"Not really, we just knew that we had a few mistakes that we could correct, and I feel like if we did those we could be victorious."

On starting for the first time in three games...
"That's what I do. I just go out there and play and try to take advantage of the time that I'm on the court. I can't really control starting or coming off the bench. That's not something I can control in the game. If I am starting, I want to provide something and I think I've been playing long enough to go out there and become a starter and help the team."

On the stretch of three's between him and two other players and how pivotal it was...
"That was a big stretch for us. We kind of let them creep back in a little bit but we stuck to it. We never lost that lead again and that helped us get the win. That really sparked our team and sparked our bench. The coaches helped us and talked to us throughout the game and kept us focused and kept us on the task. We got what we were looking for."

On what it was like in the locker room...
"It was a new feeling. It was different. I know we have a long bus ride to the airport and a long plane ride but at least we get to go home happy. We always have to go home and have a meeting, and we always dread the meeting because we lost and did stuff wrong. Now that we have this win, we don't have to have that meeting. We get to play around, laugh and enjoy the bus ride and plane ride back home."

On if the coach handed out a game ball or did anything special...
"No, it was a team effort. Coach Mike isn't that type of coach. He's really a team guy and doesn't want to give out any individual awards. Everybody did their part, whether it was one minute or 10 and everybody contributed from the last man to the first man on the bench. It was a team win."

Arkansas Head Coach Mike Anderson

Opening Statement...
"I thought it was a highly contested game between two teams fighting , scratching, and trying to find a way to get a win. Obviously, we were trying to get one on the road after coming off the road against Vanderbilt and not playing as well as we were capable of playing. It was good to have Marshawn Powell out there on the floor. Our last game, he got in foul trouble, and it really hurt our basketball team. Tonight, he got in foul trouble, but we had some other guys come off the bench and really step up. Jacorey Williams gave us some great minutes. Hunter Mickleson gave us some great minutes, and BJ Young did a great job starting out, and he was the player we know he's capable of being. It was good to see him come out and really get into the rhythm. I thought Rickey Scott really gave us some good momentum early on. We did a great job on Frankie Sullivan. Frankie had 27 points at our place, and that's something we really talked about, and not letting Rob Chubb dictate the paint. Our defense was a lot better this game compared to when we played them before. It's a good win for us."

On the success here in Auburn...
"I don't think it's a success, I just think we played well. We were a little bit better than they were tonight. Last year's game was a tough game. It's kind of like when you start off the season. You're putting it together and things just start falling in place. We've been through a lot this year, so it's just a matter of time before things start falling in place for our basketball team. I thought we took advantage of the advantages we did have, with a guy like Marshawn Powell that can step in, BJ Young that can get in open court and make some plays for us, and we made some shots. When you're making shots it makes a big difference, but our defense was good, and it's that time of year where teams are going to play with a sense of urgency. I thought our focus was great today. I could see it at the shoot around and pregame. Our guys were really honing in on the task at hand, and we came out and performed for 40 minutes. We've done it for 30 minutes. We've done it for 25, but we fought tonight for 40 minutes."

On the matchup...
"I think it's a good matchup when you talk about both teams in ways. They have versatile guys. They have guys that can knock shots down. They have guys that can attack off the dribble. They have a presence with Rob Chubb. He plays a lot of people. He plays a lot of players. We play a lot of players."

On the excitement...
"I think our guys are excited. This is something our guys have been working towards all year long, and it's just the start for them. They've been close in some games, but close doesn't get it done, and they were able to get it done. Hopefully that will be good for their confidence. We've got a real tough stretch coming up, so every game is an important game."

On their 9 point run...
"The way we play is a game of runs, and you never know when it's going to take place. We had some runs early in the first half. I think we went up about 9 points. I thought our defense was the difference and in that particular sequence I think it's the game of runs. We had those guys resting a little bit and then they came in. That's why our bench did a great job. I was able to rest those guys, and some of them got into foul trouble. When they got a chance to get a rest, they came back in and I thought they were really in a rhythm, whether it be defense or offense. We had four assists at halftime. That tells me how we played. We ended up with 16 assists and that tells me we were sharing the basketball, and we were making shots as well."

On the points made off of turnovers...
"Well it's always big, what we do. You have to give credit to your defense and when you look, most of the time we played half court man defense, and that tells me that our defense is getting better. I say we did a great job on closing out on Frankie Sullivan. He torched us at our place, and we did a good job of really getting in the pass lane, touching balls, deflecting balls and coming up with loose balls. That's big when you can score off of your defense. That makes it a lot easier on your half court."
