Mississippi State vs. Auburn Postgame Quotes
January 20, 2007

Mississippi State Head Coach Rick Stansbury

OPENING COMMENTS...
"Auburn is a very good basketball team. We were concerned about this game in a lot of ways - where it was sandwiched, having this week off and some people not realizing how good Auburn is. They went to Oklahoma State and got beat by one and went to LSU and had a chance to win that basketball game. I thought the first half we played like we had been off. We had some open shots and missed them. We really felt like at halftime - if we are going to get those shots, we are going to step up and make some. We were much more the aggressor in the second half. Anytime you can jump up and make shots like Barry [Stewart] and Reggie [Delk]. The key to that was Jamont Gordon and Dietric Slater's ability to split that 1-3-1 and create plays. Give Auburn credit, they are a well-coached basketball team.

ON THE SECOND HALF...
"We were very positive at halftime because I felt like there were some things that we didn't do that we know we can do better. We wanted to be more aggressive in the second half. The first three or four minutes of that second half were huge for us, closing that gap and making it a close game. We decided to go small to open the second half. That was our best offensive attacking team."

ON IMPROVEMENT AT FREE-THROW LINE...
"Remember, free throw shooting is about having the right people shooting them. We were 22-of-26 but let's make sure when we look at the stats, we had the right people at the foul line and that does not always happen consistently."

ON BARRY STEWART...
"Barry Stewart steps up home or away, steps up everyday at 2:30 [for practice] when no one is around and no one is cheering for him. He is the same every day and every possession and that's what makes him so special. When you take a young man like that, who has some talent and can shoot it, but has that kind of attitude and work ethic - those are a rare breed. I haven't seen him show emotion yet. Has anyone ever seen him jump up and smile after making three or four threes? But I love that in a player - consistent."

ON REGINALD DELK'S SHOTS IN THE SECOND HALF...
"I remember him missing one and it took a wild bounce and we got the rebound and brought it right back to him again and knocked it down. We all have great confidence in Reggie [Delk]. I think he is shooting the basketball well right now."

ON DIETRIC SLATER...
"No substitute for experience, he brings energy and toughness every day. He had 13 points and eight rebounds - we don't run anything for him, he manufactures all of his baskets. He plays with tremendous effort. You have to have those little pieces and he is a great piece in the mixture."

Auburn Head Coach Jeff Lebo

OPENING COMMENTS...
"Congratulations to Mississippi State, I think they definitely deserved to win this game. In the second half, they were terrific offensively. We did not have a way to stop them from shooting the basketball. We battled hard and did a lot of good things throughout the game, but offensively they were very sound today and we did not have an answer."

ON THE FINAL TWO OR THREE MINUTES...
"They were making shots, getting foul shots and making their foul shots. That is what you have to do to come from behind and win. They made some shots in the second half from the corners that were terrific shots, especially by [Reginald] Delk. They made the right two or three pass sequences and found the open man to knock down the shot. Delk had three shots, that were tough shots. He made them in our 1-3-1 zone with a defender in his face. When you have to guard the wing so hard because they are making those shots, it makes it easy for [Jamont] Gordon to beat you to the middle and find his shot or a dish off. They are a very tough team to defend when they hit shots. I thought we were very good in the first half, but we let them comeback towards the end of the first half. We got caught up in the emotion of the game and just did not execute as well as we could have down the stretch."

ON AUBURN'S SHOT SELECTION...
"We took some quick shots and that is out of character for us. I kept trying to keep our guys from getting caught up in the game and slow the pace. We were close down the stretch at times with it being a five or six point game. They were 22-of-26 from the line and we were 9-of-13 - everything else we were statistically even. I was surprised with our rebounding effort but glad to see the hustle."

ON MISSED LAYUPS...
"Well, we missed three layups. We had a few fast breaks where we did not capitalize on. Early on we would get opportunities for layups and miss them. I thought we had the chance to extend our lead to possibly 10 or 12 points before halftime, but missed opportunities cost that. We still did some good things today though. I think our kids felt confident coming here with a win over Tennessee. We battled hard, the last couple times here it has not been a good experience. Our kids were disappointed about this loss."

Mississippi State Player Quotes

4- Barry Stewart - Freshman Guard
ON PLAYING AS A FRESHMAN...
"As emotional as you get into the game, you get nervous, you get tense. Me staying calm and relaxed, I think that helps me as a freshman."

ON PLAYING FLORIDA...
"I know they are going to be in our place. I know I have 10,000 plus behind me."

ON TRADING THREE-POINTERS WITH AUBURN IN THE GAME...
"That is how the game developed. We didn't plan on it. We knew with the zone that they ran we were going to get a lot of shots. We just had to knock them down."

24- Reginald Delk - Sophomore Guard/Forward
ON THE BREAK...
"We've been off for the longest. We had a little rest and we knew in the second half that were going to get shots because we were getting open looks. We knew we were going to knock down shots.

ON PLAYING FLORIDA...
"It is going to be big. It is going to be a live crowd in here. It is just going to be a big game."

ON THREE-POINT SHOOTING...
"It was big. They kept leaving us wide open. In the first half we were rusty. In the second half we knew we were going to knock down shots."

ON BREAK CAUSING RUSTY SHOOTING...
"That was a big part of it. Coming in, we had that week off. They came in with that big win at Tennessee. We knew they would come in hyped. We just came in the second half and concentrated on knocking down our shots."

22 - Dietric Slater - Senior Forward/Guard
ON DIFFERENCE IN THE GAME...
"When we went in for halftime, Coach [Stansbury] was saying they were getting too many offensive rebounds and they seemed to be playing harder than we were. They were hitting big shots. He told us when we got back out there to make sure we defend more and do all the little things right. They have been playing good teams before they played us. We just wanted to make a statement in beating them."

ON BREAKING DOWN THE ZONE...
"As far as me and Jamont [Gordon], when people play a zone we know we are not the best shooters and no one can really stop us driving unless we run someone over. We can get all of our guys open anytime. As much as we love to drive, they are either going to stop us or us stop them. This team is balanced out pretty good."
