Head Coach Tony Barbee
Opening Comments...
"Offensively we were challenged. We had trouble with shots, layups and getting the ball into the post. We lack that against
other teams. We are a limited team and are what we are."
On Renardo Sidney ...
"He is a talented player. We didn't have much footage on him or Dee Bost, but we knew what to expect from both."
On Chris Denson...
"He's able to score. He struggles in other areas, but is able to take shots. I'm planning on giving him more minutes and
hopefully spark our offense."
#22- Kenny Gabriel; Jr. F
On the second half...
"We knew we needed to make more shots. Shooting was the main focus."
On mentality at halftime ...
"We wanted to score more as well as pick up our defense. From now on we need to come out with more energy during
each half."
Mississippi State Locker Room
Head Coach Rick Stansbury
Opening Comments...
"The big thing was I thought our team came out ready to play defensively. In the fi rst seven minutes of the game, we
played fi ve defense and we have done well using that defense with the line-up we have. We picked up some fouls, and we
had make some substitutions and played zone for most of the game. I thought we took some things from practice and really
carried them over to the game today. The bad thing is we had too many unforced turnovers. We did not make enough
plays, particularly in the fi rst half, and one pass to another turned into a turnover. We were unable to capitalize in the fi rst
half on turnovers. Overall, we have a long way to go as a team but I was pleased today with our team."
On excitement of the game...
"It is easy to have fun with a big lead, but I tell the guys that you have to be your best when you are down. I was impressed
towards the end of the fi rst half when our guys kept their excitement even when there were several turnovers in a
row. I thought Dee was much better at that."
On play of Ravern Johnson...
"I have not really been worried about Ravern a whole lot. I would not classify as him struggling but really it is just a new
team. Everyone is adapting to this new team that we have only had together for three games. He will make shots as the
stretch goes on with the new team."
On play of Renardo Sidney...
"I think in the fi rst half he only took two shots, but he affected the game. When you can affect the game in other ways than
the ones you know you can do, the team will be much better. The other night at Ole Miss he affected the scoring and did
very well in the zone they played. In that post we do not need you leading us in assists, but in scoring. In a zone though,
that opens up the opportunity to pass the basketball. This is a continual process with him on keeping up his hard work in
every aspect of the game."
On play off the bench...
"Well, Jalen Steele is a guy that can attack the rim and make plays. He is not a guy who is afraid to play, and the way he
played down the stretch today is exactly what I expect out of him. We all know he can and expect him to play like he did
today. I thought John Reik did a great job off the bench tonight. He brought us a lot of cheering which was a good thing.
You can never fault John's effort, and he came off the bench to put up fi ve points, fi ve rebounds, and three blocks in ten
minutes."
#3-Dee Bost; Jr. G
On the win...
"It was easy coming off of a big win at Ole Miss, but we knew that we still needed to win this game. Every game counts."
On Ravern Johnson...
"It was good to see him get on track and get his confidence back."
On the win for this season...
"It is important because we knew we needed it and we had been going backwards. Hopefully we can keep making a run
for it and keep winning."
#2 Ravern Johnson; Sr. G
On getting the team refocused...
"We have been having hard practices, and everybody is getting on the same page. We just had the big win against Ole
Miss and everything is starting to click and get better."
On Ravern's slump...
"I tried to stay positive about the whole thing. The coaches told me to shoot it until I get back in rhythm, so that is what I
have been trying to do. Hopefully everything has come back on track."
On shooting without pressure...
"It is a lot easier when you know the guys are scoring, and you know you do not have to make every shot."
