Steve Smith enters his fourth season at Auburn under head coach Tony Barbee as the Executive Director of Basketball.
Smith is responsible for all internal aspects of the Auburn Basketball operations and also serves as a liaison between the coaches and senior athletic department administrators, the Auburn basketball family and Auburn community.
In addition, he works closely with the Director of Basketball Operations on all duties, including coordinating day of event duties, camp-related matters and work with the entire staff on strategic initiatives involving the basketball program.
Smith is responsible for all activities associated with Coach Barbee, including business relationships, speaking engagements, endorsements, event planning and travel. He also works closely with Coach Barbee developing the Tony Barbee Scholarship Fund and all other special projects involving Coach Barbee and the basketball program.
Prior to joining the Auburn staff, Smith worked for years as John Calipari's personal assistant. Smith and Coach Barbee spent six years working together in Memphis alongside Coach Calipari. Smith's relationship with Coach Barbee dates back to when Coach Barbee was playing at the University of Massachusetts.
Smith has a background in both the business and sports world. During his athletic career, he has worked in various roles with the New Jersey Nets, Atlanta Braves and Enterprise Sports Radio Network.
Smith earned a bachelor's degree in Sports Management from the University of Massachusetts in 1981.
Born Aug. 24, 1955, in Boston, Mass., Smith is married to the former Kristin Ross of Amherst, Mass., and they have one daughter, Nichole (12), who trains at Auburn University Gymnastics Academy. John Calipari was the best man in their wedding. Smith also has a daughter, Stefanie (20).
