Behind a solid effort by its pitching staff, the Blue team took a 1-0 lead in the best-of-three Orange-Blue World Series on Wednesday night with a 6-2 victory. Freshman Trent Mummey had the game-winning hit in the bottom of the seventh for the Blue team.
Sophomore Michael Hurst earned the win in relief for the Blue team, throwing three no-hit innings behind starter Corey Luckie, who went 5.0 innings and allowed just three hits while striking out four. Junior Evan Crawford pitched the final inning for the Blue, striking out two.
Freshman Justin Hargett was 3-for-4 with an RBI while Justin Jones went 1-for-3, delivering a game-tying triple in the seventh.
Austin Hubbard went 5.0 innings in the start for the Orange team, allowing a run on five hits and a walk, striking out one.
The two teams will play Game 2 at 3pm CT at Plainsman Park on Thursday.
