A weekly look at how the Tigers playing in summer leagues did over the past week. Included in this week's update is a look at the start of summer-league playoffs.
Cape Cod League
Evan Crawford has been dominating opposing hitters out of the bullpen, carving out a 0.79 ERA and striking out 33 opposing batters in 13 appearances for the Harwich Mariners, who have officially been eliminated from the post-season chase, standing at 12-25, 14.5 games out of first in the Eastern Division ... Crawford did not pitch at all in the last week for Harwich as the team went winless over the past week but he did appear as an All-Star, throwing 1.0 inning and getting touched for a run on one hit ... Crawford, who will spend Thursday night at Fenway Park in Boston as a CCBL All-Star, and the Mariners close out the season this week with five games.
Coastal Plain League
Sean Ray allowed one run on two hits and two walks in just 0.1 innings last Wednesday but still wound up the winner to move to 3-0 for the Peninsula Pilots ... Wednesday's appearance was the only one of the week for Ray, who now sports a 3.79 ERA in 19.0 innings with 21 strikeouts ... Peninsula has just one week left in its season and is currently 13-9 and in second place in the North Division's second-half standings.
Clark Griffith League
Eric Skinner and the Fairfax Nationals lost in the championship game of the Jacobs Cup, falling 6-2 to the Vienna Senators to close out the Clark Griffith League season ... Skinner went 1-for-3 with a walk and two runs scored in the semi-finals to help Fairfax to a 5-3 win to advance to the championship game ... Teammate Grant Dayton also made a relief appearance in the semis, throwing 2.0 innings and allowing just one hit while striking out three ... In the final game of the summer season, Skinner went 0-for-4 to close out his summer with a .284 batting average in 20 games, scoring 16 runs ... Dayton, who joined the team late, finished the summer 1-1 with a 0.69 ERA in six appearances, striking out 19 while walking just two in 13.0 innings.
New England Collegiate Baseball League
Austin Hubbard had his roughest outing of the summer last week as he took the loss in an 8-6 defeat to the North Adams SteepleCats ... Throwing in front of coach Tom Slater, who reports that Hubbard looked good in striking out nine hitters, Hubbard took his lumps by allowing eight runs on eight hits in 5.1 innings ... Hubbard is currently 2-2 on the season with a 2.72 ERA in nine starts, striking out 52 (third in the league) in 49.2 innings ... Newport currently holds a one-game lead over Torrington in the Southern Division with Torrington playing two make-up games on Wednesday before the playoffs start on Thursday.
Shenandoah Valley League
The playoffs are underway in the Valley League and three teams with Auburn ties have made the summer post-season ... Winchester, which features Tigers Luke Greinke, Joseph Sanders, Scott Shuman and Bryan Woodall, are the fourth-seed in the playoffs and are currently up 1-0 in their best-of-three first-round series with Staunton ... Proving that there is some fun to be had at times in the summer leagues, Bryan Woodall played the final three innings of the regular-season finale at the hot corner, earning an assist while also going 0-for-1 at the plate ... It was back to business on Tuesday night, however, as the Royals earned a 7-5 win in the playoff opener ... Greinke started on the mound and went 5.2 innings, allowing four runs and not factoring in the decision but it was a Woodall save that gave the Royals the game one win ... Greinke did go 1-for-3 with a walk and two RBIs in the clean-up spot while Sanders was 1-for-4 with a run ... The No. 6 Front Royal Cardinals and Bradley Ray own a 1-0 lead in their series with Luray after winning 10-5 on Tuesday night ... Ray went 0-for-5 in the game but is hitting .262 on the summer with 16 RBI ... Covington (Michael Hurst and Ty Kelley) also have a 1-0 lead as the seventh-seeded Lumberjacks defeated #2 Harrisonburg, 4-1 on Tuesday ... Hurst earned his first win of the summer in the regular-season finale, throwing an inning of relief ... Hurst has a 3.38 ERA in 10 relief appearances while Kelley has a 6.00 ERA in five outings.
