AUBURN, Ala. -
Auburn closed to within a run after five innings but could not hold off No. 28 LSU as AU fell to the Bayou Bengals, 8-2, in the series finale at Plainsman Park on Sunday afternoon. The loss dropped Auburn to 22-28 overall, 9-15 SEC. LSU is now 32-17, 11-13 SEC.
LSU's Jonathan Wilhite picked up the win with 4.2 innings of two-hit relief to move to 2-1 on the season. He had entered with one out in the bottom of the fifth and did not allow a runner past second while fanning four AU hitters.
LSU had taken a 3-0 lead after two-and-a-half innings only to see Auburn bounce back with two runs in the bottom half of the frame on a RBI triple to the wall in left-center by Jeff Boutwell and a RBI single into right by Russell Dixon one batter later. Whilhite entered three batters later and shut the door on Auburn from there on out.
Chris Dennis (3-5) suffered the loss in the start for Auburn, allowing three runs (two earned) on seven hits in 5.0 innings, striking out four.
Auburn returns to the diamond on Friday night for its final home series of the year as Georgia comes to town. First pitch for Friday night is set for 7 p.m. CT.
