Tigers Fall To Samford, 8-0
April 26, 2011
AUBURN, Ala. - The Auburn baseball team could muster just six hits off of Samford as it lost 8-0 Tuesday night at Plainsman Park. The loss dropped Auburn's record to 22-18 while Samford improved to 25-17.
"It's just frustrating," Auburn Head Coach John Pawlowski said. "You don't get out of the gates, and you struggle from the very beginning of the ballgame. On top of that, we didn't get anything going offensively. I thought Will Kendall did a really good job for us and allowed us to save our bullpen."
Auburn starting pitcher Andrew Morris took the loss and dropped to 1-3, while Samford's starter Josh Martin earned the win to improve to 3-1. Morris allowed seven runs in three innings of work while Martin held Auburn off the board for six innings.
Kendall gave Auburn 5 1/3 innings out of the bullpen behind Morris, allowing a ninth-inning run.
Samford took an early 4-0 lead in the top of the first and didn't let it go. With two on and one out, Brandon Miller (2-4, 2 R, 2 RBI) doubled to score Michael Johnson (2-5, R) and Brad Moss (2-4, 2 R). Phillip Ervin (2-4, 2 R, 5 RBI) then doubled to bring home Miller. Ervin stole third and scored on a ground out from Kevin Putkonen (0-4, RBI).
After limiting Auburn to just two hits through two, Samford widened the lead in the top of the third. With one out, Saxon Butler (2-5, R) singled to short followed by another single from Miller. Ervin went deep to left for his fourth home run of the season to give Samford a 7-0 lead after two and a half.
The game went scoreless until the top of the ninth. Moss singled to left and advanced to second on a ground out from Butler. Moss moved to third on a wild pitch by Kendall and scored on a fielder's choice grounder from Ervin.
Kevin Patterson had two of Auburn's six hits, his 10th multi-hit game of the season.
First pitch for Wednesday's Auburn vs. Texas Southern baseball game at Plainsman Park will be at 6 pm.
