AUBURN -- His grandchildren weren't going to believe he saw Cam Newton. He was convinced of that. So Newton was asked if he'd pose for a photo with him. That'd be proof.

Cameras in cell phones are handy things. Newton smiled and obliged.

It was just another day for the very unique Auburn student named Cam Newton, who helped the Tigers to the 2010 national championship, who has a regular job quarterbacking the NFL's Carolina Panthers and who dropped by practice Wednesday to check up on head coach Gus Malzahn

Newton has a statue outside of Jordan-Hare Stadium. His stature is intact among the Auburn faithful, too. No telling how many photos have been snapped of the Heisman Trophy winner accommodating a fan who had excitedly asked for a moment of his time.

"I don't think people understand that I'm a regular guy," Newton said. "When they act like they act, it surprises me. I'm like, 'Whoa. Whoa. I'm just a guy that played football here.' We did some incredible things, but I'm nothing more than that.

"Auburn, being the place it has been for the past years, and the years to come, is always going to be a close-knit community. You always have an appreciation to say, 'I'm part of the Auburn family.' Some people just don't get it. But this morning, it wasn't any different than me going to class, just talking to people. That gentleman was excited, but, at the same time, I'm excited as well to reminiscence about the good times."
