AUBURN, Ala. - The Auburn track and field team will split meets this weekend as the Tigers will send the majority of the team to the annual Tyson Invitational in Fayetteville, Ark., while sending 10 distance runners to the Iowa State Classic in Ames, Iowa. The two meets mark the final meets before the Tigers compete in the 2014 SEC Indoor Championships.
"This weekend will be our stiffest test of the season against very, very good competition, but it is what we need before we head to SECs in two weeks," Auburn head coach Ralph Spry said. "We have a split squad with our athletes and two meets. Both are set up with strong fields at each meet. There will be strong sprints and field competition in Fayetteville and some of the nation's top distance runners in Ames. We hope to knock out two birds with one stone and put down some good marks.
Unfortunately, the weather has not been cooperating with us and it's been difficult to get outside, but next week we will have better weather, so we should have two good weeks to prepare for the conference meet. We like the group we have competing this weekend and feel good about them going out and competing."
At the Husker Invitational last weekend, junior thrower Valentina Muzaric recorded a new school record in the shot put with a throw of 17.00m, which ranks as the longest throw in the SEC this season and fifth longest in the nation. Freshman Emily Stevens won the 800 meter race by over two seconds, with a personal-best time of 2:11.02. Junior Samantha Berggren placed fourth at 2:16.16 In the triple jump, freshman Marshay Ryan notched a new personal record with a jump of 42-2.25/12.86m, which ranks third nationally among freshmen.
Distance runners Veronica Eder and Taylor Duncan finished in the top-5 in the 3000 meter with personal best times of 9:48.09 and 9:48.46, respectively. Freshman Susan Rachel Givens set a new personal record in the mile with a time of 4:56.14. Freshman Teray Smith placed fifth in the 200m with a personal best 21.27, which ranks sixth among freshman nationally and third among SEC freshman.
Heptathlete Parker Shearer recorded four personal bests in the pole vault (4.00m), 60m dash (7.55), high jump (6-5.50/1.97m) and shot put (41-11.25/12.78m).
