AUBURN, Ala. –Auburn track and field returns to action Saturday as it hosts Alabama, LSU and Ohio State in the Auburn Invitational at the Birmingham Crossplex.
“We got off to a great start in our first meet and we are hoping to see some improvement this weekend,” Auburn head coach Ralph Spry said. “We have a lot of new faces competing in this meet and I am excited to see what they can bring to the team. This will be a very competitive weekend with Alabama, LSU and Ohio State and I look forward to watching our team compete.”
In the first meet of the season, Auburn recorded 17 personal bests, including two NCAA top times. Akeem Bloomfield earned SEC Freshman Runner of the Week honors after winning the 400m with a national-best 46.68 in the first indoor meet of his career. Veronica Eder also added a NCAA top time and earned SEC Women’s Runner of the Week with a 9:24.31 in the women’s 3000m, which also ranks as the second-best time in Auburn history.
The Tigers will look to build their early success against a tough lineup on Saturday. Alabama (17), LSU (3) and Ohio State (21) all rank in the USTFCCCA top-25 men’s polls, while LSU ranks seventh and Alabama 22nd on the women’s side.
