Seven Tigers punched their tickets to the NCAA Outdoor Championships and four more advanced to Saturday’s quarterfinals on day two of the NCAA East Preliminaries on Friday in Lexinton, Ky.
“We came out with some strong performances today,” Auburn head coach Ralph Spry said. “The key athletes we needed to advance took care of business and punched their ticket to Eugene. Our 200 meter runners also put up strong performances to advance to quarterfinals as well. If we have another strong day tomorrow, we have a chance to do some damage in Eugene.”
For the first time in school history, three Tigers qualified for NCAA Outdoors in the 400 meters. Akeem Bloomfield and Nathon Allen both won their heat in the event to punch their ticket, while Randall Ceneus ran a personal best 45.83 to qualify on time.
Junior Odean Skeen and Raheem Chambers also punch their tickets to Eugene, Ore. in the 100 meters, marking the first time since 2012 that the Tigers have had multiple qualifiers in the event. Skeen ran a 10.24 to win the second heat, while Chambers ran 10.37 and qualified on time.
On the women’s side, two Tigers punched their tickets to Eugene as Jonielle Smith advanced in the 100 meters and Sashel Brown advanced in the 400 meter hurdles. Brown matched a career high in the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 46.20. Smith finished sixth overall in the 100 meters with a time of 11.40.
Freshman Jaron Brooks will kick off the final day of the NCAA East Preliminaries tomorrow in the men’s high jump at 4:30 p.m. CT. Running events are set to begin at 5:00 p.m. with the women’s 4x100 meter relay. The Tigers will wrap up the meet in the men’s 4x400 meter relay, set to begin at 8:45 p.m.
