AUBURN, Ala. - Senior distance runner Veronica Eder punched her ticket to the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships after finishing second in the women's 10,000 meters on Thursday at the NCAA Preliminaries in Lexington, Ky. Eder becomes the first female 10k runner to advance to the NCAA Championships since 2011.
"I thought we had a really good day today," Auburn head coach Ralph Spry said. "Veronica has been running well for us all year, so it's good go see her make it through. I also thought that we advance some key people in key events today as well. We just need to keep our focus and get ready for tomorrow."
After just missing the cut in the 10,000m last year with a 16th place finish, Eder ran a 33:38.13 to finish second overall and advance to Eugene, Ore., home of the 2017 Outdoor meet.
Odean Skeen provided some early fireworks in the men's 100m as he ran 10.09 to break the Kentucky Outdoor Track and Field Facility record and qualify for tomorrow's quarterfinals.
Three Tigers qualified for the quarterfinals of the men's 400 meters as Nathon Allen finished as the top qualifier with a time of 45.82. Fellow freshman Akeem Bloomfield ran 46.10 while Randall Ceneus ran 46.37.
Jonielle Smith ran the second fastest time of the day to advance in the women's 100 meters. The sophomore won the third heat with an 11.19.
