AUBURN, Ala. -- The Auburn men’s and women’s track team recorded two wins and nine personal bests on the first day of competition on Friday at the Tiger Track Classic held at the Hutsell-Rosen Track in Auburn.
Freshman Justin Carter claimed the javelin throw title with a distance of 222-07/67.84m, the fifth-longest throw in school history. In Carter’s first meet as a Tiger, the Auburn, Ala., native broke the freshman school record with a throw of 223-11/68.26m. Sophomore Jace Owens recorded a top-five finish with a personal best throw of 194-01/59.16m.
Sophomore Taylor Duncan won the women’s 5000 meter with a time of 16:49.90 after passing Krista Moylan on the final lap. In the men’s 5000 meter senior Niklas Buhner was runner-up with a personal best time of 14:09.30, besting his previous time of 14:25.64 set at the 2012 War Eagle Invitational. Junior Griffin Jaworski finished fifth at 14:34.27, a new personal best. Seniors Samuel Mueller, Jason Miller and Andrew Scott recorded personal bests with times of 14:43.07, 15:09.64 and 15:35.49, respectively.
Sophomore Victoria Bernardo placed fourth in the women’s hammer throw with a throw of 167-05/51.02m. Senior Tori Nwadiogbu (166-01/50.63m), sophomore Amber Sudzius (154-11/47.23m) and senior Anna McCloskey (152-09/46.55m) set new personal bests in the event.
Action at the Tiger Track Classic will begin at 11:00 am with the women’s pole vault and will conclude at 5:15 pm with the men’s invitational 1500 meter.
