AUBURN, Ala. -
The Auburn University cross country team will host the 2006 Auburn Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 30 at Indian Pines Golf Course in Auburn, Ala. This marks the 14th year of the event, which will feature 50 teams (24 men and 26 women) from 24 schools around the country. The women will race an 5K beginning at 9:30 a.m. CT, while the men will race an 8K beginning at 10:15 a.m.
The men will be looking to defend their 2005 team title, while the women will look to improve on their 14th place finish. Last season, Samford took the women's team title and Shannon Wommack of Tennessee-Chattanooga was the individual champion, while Vincent Rono of South Alabama took the men's individual title.
"This is a very exciting time of the season for us," head coach Pete Watson said. "We know who our top-six runners are going to be and we are ready to showcase our team in front of our fans."
The women's team has one tournament victory on the season, a first place finish at the Cougar Invitational hosted by Columbus State. The men's highest finish has been second place, also recorded at the Cougar Invitational.
Indian Pines (900 Country Club Lane) will once again be the host site for the event.
"Indian Pines is a very nice cross country course," Watson said. "It is flat and runs very fast. Teams that come here know exactly what they are going to get out of it because it is all right out in front of you."
