Saenz Shows Out on International Stage
Oct. 26, 2011
GUADALAJARA, Mexico -Auburn sophomore Stephen Saenz placed fourth in the shot put at the 2011 Pan-American Games on Tuesday. Competing for Mexico, Saenz posted a throw of 19.54 meters on his first attempt of the competition. Saenz received his Mexican passport this summer through his maternal grandmother, a Mexico native. His opening performance was enough to place fourth - just .07 hundredths of a meter away from a medal. Saenz was one of just two Mexican entries in the event. Saenz, who redshirted the 2010 season, posted the second-best mark in all of NCAA Division I a season ago and the third-best mark in Auburn history with a throw of 19.82 meters (65-0) at the 2011 NCAA East Region preliminary round. The throw was also a personal best for Saenz. A native of Rio Grande City, Texas, Saenz was the 2011 SEC Freshman Field Athlete of the Year for both indoor and outdoor seasons, as well as an All-American. He won a conference title at the 2011 SEC Outdoor championships last spring and placed fourth at nationals in the shot put.
