Izmir, Turkey -- Former Auburn two-time NCAA Champion Gabor Mate captured bronze in the discus on Wednesday evening at the World University Games.
Less than a week ago, Mate competed in the qualifying round of the discus at the IAAF World Championship in Athletics in Helsinki, Finland. Mate failed to qualify for the finals after throwing only 58.97m (193-5). Mate rebounded back in Turkey and threw 61.91m (203-1) to take home the bronze for Hungary.
Mate was in silver medal position with one throw remaining in the finals before Omar El Ghazaly of Egypt threw 62.28m. Gerd Kanter of Estonia, the reigning silver medalist from the World Championships, won the gold (65.29m).
