Auburn junior Jacob Dunkleberger has been named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District IV Cross Country/Track and Field first team. Dunkleberger, who will compete in the finals of the hammer throw at the NCAA Outdoor Championships Friday, will now be eligible for the national ballot.
Dunkleberger, a native of Smyrna, Ga., owns a 3.30 grade-point average in business administration at Auburn. He is a four-time All-American entering the 2007 NCAA outdoor meet, including a fifth-place finish in the weight throw at the 2007 NCAA Indoor Championships. He ranked fourth in the NCAA in the hammer throw entering the championship meet.
Dunkleberger was second in the hammer throw at the Mideast Regional Championships and the SEC Outdoor Championships, and was seventh in the shot put at the SEC meet. He was also runner-up in the weight throw at the SEC Indoor Championships. He ranks second in Auburn history in the hammer throw and weight throw and seventh in the shot put.
To be nominated, student-athletes must be a starter or important reserve on their teams, and carry a cumulative GPA of 3.20 or higher. Team members are selected by a vote of members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) within the district. The District IV team is complied of athletes in the states of Alabama, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio and Tennessee.
