Auburn senior Jacob Dunkleberger has been named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District IV Cross Country/Track and Field first team. Dunkleberger, who will compete in the hammer throw at the NCAA Outdoor Championships next week, will now be eligible for the national ballot.
Dunkleberger, a native of Smyrna, Ga., graduated from Auburn in May with a bachelor of science in business administration, majoring in logistics and business administration. He completed his undergraduate work with a 3.48 cumulative grade-point average.
Dunkleberger is a six-time All-American entering the 2008 NCAA Outdoor Championships and is the defending national champion in the hammer throw. He enters the 2008 outdoor meet ranked No. 2 nationally in the hammer throw.
Dunkleberger won an SEC Championship in the weight throw and finished second at the NCAA Championships during the 2008 indoor season. He was second in the hammer throw at the Mideast Regional Championships and the SEC Championships in each of the last two years. He ranks second in Auburn history in the hammer throw and weight throw, seventh in the indoor shot put and eighth in the outdoor shot put.
To be nominated, student-athletes must be a starter or important reserve on their teams, and carry a cumulative GPA of 3.20 or higher. Team members are selected by a vote of members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) within the district. The District IV team is complied of athletes in the states of Alabama, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio and Tennessee.
