GREENSBORO, N.C. - Auburn track and field begins the first step at a national championship on Thursday at the NCAA East Preliminary Round hosted by North Carolina A&T State University at Aggie Stadium.

Auburn's 19 entries will compete against the best from east of the Mississippi River for a post at the national championship meet. The west regional is also being held in Austin, Texas from Thursday-Saturday.

Auburn's contingent is led by a pair of SEC champions in Marcus Popenfoose (shot put) and DJ Smith (high jump). Senior sprinter Harry Adams was the runner-up in the 100m at the national meet in 2012 and will compete in both the 100 and 200 meters along with the 4x100m relay this season.

Senior women's high jumper Maya Pressley enters the meet as the second-ranked competitor with clearance at 6-2 (1.88m) this season.

The top 12 competitors in each event from both the east and west advance to the 2013 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships hosted by the University of Oregon at historic Hayward Field from June 5-8.
