AUBURN, Ala. - Auburn track and cross country runner Angela Homan has been honored as one of Auburn University's recipients of the Algernon Sydney Sullivan Award for 2006. The awards recognize students and others who exhibit excellence in character, service to humanity, scholarship and other qualities.

Homan, a senior majoring in exercise science, was honored along with Joseph Hood, professor emeritus from the College of Agriculture, and Corey Edwards, a senior in business administration. The university presents the awards annually to at least one AU student and one non-student, usually either a current or retired faculty or staff member or an alumnus. Auburn is one of several Southern universities that present the awards, which are sponsored by the Algernon Sydney Sullivan Foundation and named for a prominent 19th century humanitarian.

"I'm honored and privileged to receive this award," said Homan. "It's nice to be recognized although there are so many others that also do so much who could be recognized as well. It's a great feeling to be able to be with kids and provide for them even with all my other commitments. I've not only been an influence in their lives, but they have been an influence in mine as well."

"Angela Homan exemplifies everything that an Auburn student-athlete should strive to be," said Auburn athletics director Jay Jacobs. "She has achieved greatness on the track and the cross country courses, but more importantly, she has displayed a dedication to academics and a desire to help the community that is almost unparalleled."

Homan, a native of Delphos, Ohio, owns a 3.887 GPA in exercise science, was a 2005 track/cross country Academic All-American and is a three-time selection on the SEC Academic Honor Roll. Since coming to Auburn, Homan has been active in a variety of community service activities, in particular working with kids through Project Uplift. She has also worked with the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life each of the past three years, and has been a volunteer at the Human Performance Rehab Center.

As part of her role on the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, she has been part of Toys for Tots, clothing drives, reading to kids and Student-Athlete Day. As a member of Alpha Epsilon Delta - a premedical honor society - she has worked with various programs for kids.

Homan has also excelled athletically as she is a three-time SEC Cross Country Champion and has been named SEC Female Cross Country Athlete of the Year on three occasions. She earned All-American honors in cross country in 2003, 2004 and 2005, and was an outdoor track All-American at 10,000m in both 2004 and 2005. Homan earned her sixth All-American award at the 2006 Indoor Track and Field Championships in the 5,000m, and currently owns school records in the outdoor 5,000m and 10,000m.
