AUBURN - Auburn track and field redshirt freshman Stephen Saenz has been named the Southeastern Conference's Men's Field Athlete of the Week, the league office announced Wednesday.

In his first shot put competition of the outdoor season, Stephen Saenz posted the top mark in the NCAA this year at the War Eagle Invitational. Saenz finished second overall behind former Tiger All-American Eric Werskey but was first among collegiate athletes with a mark of 19.38 meters (63-7). His mark is more than 11 inches farther than anybody else in the NCAA this year. His mark also ranks third in Auburn history and broke the Auburn freshman record by two-and-a-half feet.

Saenz also placed seventh in the discus during the meet with a throw of 53.07m (174-01).

Saenz and the 17th-ranked Tigers will compete at the Mississippi Open in Oxford, Miss., this Saturday.
