NEW ORLEANS - Auburn men's track and field is ranked fifth and the women's team stands 21st in the first edition of the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) National Team Computer Rankings released Tuesday.
"We are excited about being one of the top ranked teams in the country to start outdoor season," Auburn head coach Ralph Spry said. "It is great news to find out that the men's team is ranked highly starting the outdoor season, but it's also good for the women to receive recognition. That lets us know that people recognize the type of teams we have. We now have to back that up and earn that position."
In the men's rankings Auburn is one of eight SEC programs in the top 25 and four in the top five overall. Texas A&M, Arkansas and Florida make up the top three. The women's list features six SEC programs in the top 25 overall.
Preseason national team rankings are calculated using data from previous seasons as a base of evaluation. Marks gained in the early part of this season will supersede previous-year marks if they are superior.
Auburn opens the 2013 outdoor season on March 28 at the Texas Relays in Austin, Texas and March 29 at the Yellow Jacket Invite in Atlanta, Ga.
