AUBURN, Ala. -
Auburn senior Jacob Dunkleberger (Smyrna, Ga.) has been named the Southeastern Conference's Male Field Event Athlete of the Week, the league office announced Tuesday. It marks the first SEC weekly honor of Dunkleberger's career.
Dunkleberger received the honor on the strength of his performance last weekend at the Rod McCravy Memorial meet in Lexington, Ky. In his first competition of the season, Dunkleberger won the weight throw with a mark of 21.87m (71-9), which ranks him No. 2 in the nation this year. His mark, which is just three centimeters shy of the nation's top mark, earned him an automatic spot in the NCAA Indoor Championships.
Dunkleberger, who also placed 11th in the shot put at the McCravy Memorial with a mark of 16.60m (54-5.5), is a two-time All-American in the weight throw and finished fifth at the NCAA Indoor Championships. He went on to win the national championship in the hammer throw during the outdoor season.
Auburn's men's and women's track and field teams will visit South Bend, Ind., for the Meyo Invitational this Friday and Saturday (Feb. 8-9).
