AUBURN - Auburn track and field redshirt freshman Stephen Saenz has been named the Southeastern Conference's Men's Freshman of the Week, the league office announced Tuesday.

Saenz won the shot put at the JRF Combined Events Invitational hosted by Clemson last weekend, recording a throw of 19.40 meters (63-7.75) that automatically qualified him for the NCAA Indoor Championships. Saenz surpassed the automatic qualifying distance of 19.30 meters to become one of just four shot putters, and the only freshman, to reach the automatic qualifying mark so far this year.

The mark by Saenz, who has now won two shot put titles in his first two collegiate meets, is the top mark in the SEC this season and ranks him No. 2 in Auburn indoor history, behind only former NCAA champion Edis Elkasevic.

Saenz and the 12th-ranked Tigers will compete at the GaREAT Invitational in Geneva, Ohio, this Friday and Saturday.
