Two Auburn Tigers were named Southeastern Conference performers of the week, the conference office announced Tuesday. Sophomore Donald Thomas was named Field Athlete of the Week, and senior Shamar Sands was named Runner of the Week.
Thomas broke a 19-year-old school record with his 2.3m (7-6.5) high jump at the Diet Pepsi Invitational. The jump, a personal best for Thomas, won the event and earned him an automatic spot at the NCAA Championships in March. His jump is also the best mark in the nation so far this season.
Sands posted a provisional qualifying mark of 7.27 in the 55m hurdles prelims, and then ran a personal-best 7.17 in the finals to win the event and earn an automatic spot in the NCAA Championships. His time is currently the best in the SEC this year.
Thomas and Sands are the second and third Tigers to win conference honors this season. Junior Cory Martin was named Field Athlete of the Week for his record-breaking performance in the weight throw at the Clemson Invitational.
The Tigers, currently ranked No. 1 in the nation, will compete Feb 2-3 at the Indiana Relays in Bloomington, Ind.
