Junior Cory Martin was named Southeastern Conference Men's Field Athlete of the Week, the conference office announced Tuesday. Martin earned two NCAA qualifying marks at the Clemson Invitational last weekend, leading Auburn to a second-place finish at the meet.
Martin won the weight throw with a 23.12m (75-10.25) toss, which broke his own school record by nine inches, set a new Clemson Indoor Track and Field Complex record and earned him an automatic spot at the NCAA Indoor Championships in March. The throw is currently the best mark in the nation this season by more than seven feet.
Martin's other qualifier was a provisional mark in the shot put. His throw of 18.49m (60-8) was good enough for second place in the event.
One of the most decorated athletes on Auburn's roster, Martin is a three-time All-American and three-time SEC champion. He will compete with the Tigers Jan. 27, at the Diet Pepsi Invitational in Gainesville, Fla.
