AUBURN – Freshman thrower Daina Levy set a new Auburn women’s hammer throw record on Friday with a throw of 197-10 (60.32m) on Friday to conclude day one of the War Eagle Invitational at Hutsell-Rosen Track.
“We didn’t have a lot of events going today and it was a little rainy and a little chilly, but Daina Levy was the big highlight today,” Auburn track and field head coach Ralph Spry said. “She threw over 60 meters. I’m really pleased with her efforts and her school record.
“It’s nice to be at home and we are looking forward to a big day tomorrow and some good opportunities for more of our athletes to qualify for the first round of NCAAs.”
Levy finished in second place overall as she eclipse the record of 196-11 set by Valentina Srsa in 2008. Her previous top throw of 194-1 ranked third and already stood as the Auburn freshman record.
Fellow Tiger Tori Nwadiogbu placed fourth in the women's hammer throw with a top mark of 172-4 (52.54m).
In the men’s hammer throw, freshman Enrique Gaitan placed third overall and established a new personal best with his throw of 173-10 (52.98m). Senior Tyler Kennedy had a top throw of 198-9 to finish second in the men’s javelin.
Action picks up Saturday morning at 11 a.m. with the women’s 4x100m relay. For the latest on Auburn track and field, follow @AUTrack on Twitter.
