AUBURN'S BRICKER AND GARCIA START OFF SEC CHAMPIONSHIPS SCORING IN FINALS OF 3-METER COMPETITION -- Feb. 18, 2002
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. -- Freshman diver Matt Bricker started off the 2002 SEC Championships for the Auburn Tigers with a fourth-place finish on the 3-meter while sophomore Caesar Garcia captured sixth-place in the same event.
Heading into the evening's finals competition, Bricker sat in second position while Garcia was in fourth for Auburn. Bricker ended the evening with a career-high score of 540.80 while Garcia finished the night with a score of 511.35.
''I have mixed emotions about tonight,'' head diving coach Jeff Shaffer said. ''The guys definitely competed better in the finals tonight, but sometimes we weren't consistent on the dives that we normally are.
''I was pleased with four out of Matt's six dives tonight and Caesar did great in the prelims and finals. Overall, we did much better than last year. This was a tough contest, but it was disappointing that Matt was less than a point out of third place.''
On the women's side, sophomore Ashley Rubenstein took 11th in the 1-meter with a score of 243.95 and freshman Rachel Korth finished 20th in the first day of competition with a score of 211.75.
''I was very pleased with Rachel's performance today,'' Shaffer said. ''This was her best performance to date and watching her progress is exciting. Ashley had just one dive that kept her out of the finals and I was very pleased with her performance as well.''
The divers will continue competition Tuesday, Feb. 19 as the women compete on the 3-meter and the men move over to the 1-meter. The swimming portion of the championships will begin Wednesday, Feb. 20.
