BRICKER AND JONES EARN WINS AT DALLAS MORNING NEWS CLASSIC -- Jan. 19, 2002
DALLAS, Texas -- Auburn freshmen Matt Bricker and BJ Jones each claimed individual titles at the Dallas Morning News Classic here Saturday night as Bricker won the 3-meter diving event and Jones took the 500-yard freestyle wrapping up the weekend’s competition.
With Bricker and Jones’ wins, the duo each earned their top score and time of the season with Bricker scoring a 345.80 on the 3-meter while Jones swam to a 4:28.22 in the 500 free. Bricker also placed fourth on the 1-meter (285.50) in Friday’s action for the Tigers.
''This was Matt’s highest score to date on the 3-meter which was even better than he did at Texas,'' head diving coach Jeff Shaffer said. ''He was more consistent today and this was a really tough field. Phillip Jones from Tennessee and Zach Wilcox from Florida will make it a great SEC competition in a few weeks. This was a very good meet for Matt as he heads into SEC and NCAA competition.''
In other action, junior Nick Kozyra finished fourth in the 200 fly with a time of 1:51.30 and freshman Will Brandt took fifth in the 200 breast with a time of 2:04.47.
Taking sixth place was Scott Talbot in the 200 back (1:52.90), Eric vanGoethem in the 100 free (46.92) and Brad Knueven in the 200 individual medley with a time of 1:56.51.
Competition concluded on Saturday night, but the No. 2-ranked Tigers will be back in action Friday, Jan. 25 when they travel to Florida for an SEC dual match up for Auburn’s final dual meet of the season.
