AUBURN WOMEN BEAT NORTHWESTERN AND TENNESSEE; BOWEN WINS FOUR EVENTS-Jan. 15, 2000

EVANSTON, ILL.- The Auburn women's swim team improved to 4-0 as the Tigers edged out #11 Northwestern 190-157 and picked up their second conference dual win of the season, defeating #19 Tennessee 194-151. For the third consecutive year, AU has beaten both teams at this double-dual meet. Freshman Maggie Bowen led AU as she claimed four first-place finishes, the 400 IM, 200 fly, 1,500 and the 200 IM and a second-place finish in the 200-meter breast.

"This was a good meet. We got a chance to see how Maggie Bowen once again continues to progress nicely and her performances today were signs of her toughness," said head coach David Marsh. "The real key for us in the meet was when we went 1-2 in the 200 fly and the 200 free. Mimi Bowen's swim in the fly was one of her bests and I like how she took it to another level. I believe that helped set the tone in the second session."

In the morning session, Maggie Bowen recorded the team's first NCAA "A" standard qualifying time of the season when she swam 4:44.38 in the 400-meter IM. The Tigers also earned first place finishes from Rada Owen in the 400-meter free (4:15.88), Cassidy Maxwell in the 100-meter free (56.57) and Mimi Bowen in the 100-meter fly (1:02.32).

In session two, the Bowen sisters went 1-2 in the 200 fly as Maggie swam 2:15.47 and Mimi swam 2:15.76 while Owen and Maxwell went 1-2 in the 200 free, swimming 2:01.24 and 2:02.07, respectively. Maggie claimed the 1,500 win with a time of 16:46.91 then followed with a time of 2:16.16 in the 200 IM for the back-to-back victories.

"I am really pleased with team's ability to come back in to the second session and gain valuable depth points," said assistant coach Kim McDonald. "We had some girls step up and fill in some voids by taking on roles they were not accustomed to."

Robyn Williford finished second in the 50-meter free with a time of 26.39 while Cortnee Adams swam 26.43 for the third-place finish.

Auburn returns home for a dual meet on Saturday, Jan. 22 against Florida. The meet will also be Senior Night for the Auburn swim team seniors.
