The Auburn Swimming and Diving program has established itself as being a dominate force on the national collegiate level in the United States. Another aspect of the sport that the 13-time NCAA champion program prides itself in is creating contenders on the international level. In the team's history, Auburn has produced 43 Olympic athletes and coaches that have represented 20 different countries on the world's biggest stage.
In total, Auburn athletes have won 28 total medals since the 1976 Olympiad in Montreal where Bill Forrester earned the first-ever medal won by a Tiger. He took the bronze in the 200 butterfly event. The first gold medal won was at the 1984 Olympiad in Los Angeles. Representing the United States, Auburn great Rowdy Gaines captured three gold medals (100 free, 400 free relay, 400 medley relay) at the Games.
Former Tiger Kristy Coventry is Auburn's most decorated Olympian, having won seven medals in two Olympic Games. She is the two-time champion of the 200 backstroke, having won in both 2004 and 2008. Coventry also is a two-time silver medalist in the 100 backstroke. She has won silver and bronze in the 200 IM and silver in the 400 IM.
At the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, Auburn swimmers combined to capture 13 medals, more than doubling the former Auburn record of six medals in single Games. The 13 medals also gave Auburn the most among all colleges and universities during the swimming porting of the Beijing Olympics.
