AUBURN - For the second week in a row, Auburn earned two of the weekly SEC swimming and diving awards. Sophomore Ava Ohlgren was named the SEC Female Swimmer of the Week while Caitlin Geary picked up SEC Female Freshman of the Week honors, the league announced Tuesday.
The pair earns the awards following their performances last week at the ConocoPhillips USA Swimming Short Course National Championships.
Ohlgren, who won the 200 IM national title last week, capped off the Short Course Championships as the third overall point scorer, tallying 70 points in the three-day meet. She also picked up six medals at the meet, taking gold in the 200 IM, silver in the 400 free relay and 400 medley relay, and bronze in the 100 free, 400 IM and the 800 free relay.
In all, the Northville, Mich. native posted NCAA automatic qualifying times in the 100 free, 200 free, 200 fly, 200 IM and 400 IM while posting "B" cuts in the 50 free and 100 fly.
With her win in the 200 IM, Ohlgren will receive an invitation to join the U.S. National Team for the FINA World Short Course Championships, April 9-13, in Manchester, England.
Geary, an Orlando native, becomes the second Tiger this season to be named SEC Freshman of the Week, following Melanie Roberts who accomplished the feat on Nov. 13.
She posted three "A" cut times at the U.S. Short Course Championships as she earned three bronze medals at the meet. Geary finished third in the 200 free with a NCAA automatic time of 1:44.85 while also picking up "A" cuts in the 500 free (12th, 4:44.69) and the 1,650 free (5th, 16:13.41).
Geary also earned bronze medals as part of the third-place 800 free relay and 400 medley relay teams.
With the end of the semester close, the Tigers will take some time off from competition, returning to action Dec. 29 - Jan. 4, 2008 for their Holiday Training Trip in Fort Peirce, Fla.
