AUBURN - A total of 11 top prospects - seven men and four women - will join the Auburn swimming & diving team for the 2013-14 season as Head Coach Brett Hawke released information about the Tigers' signing class today.
Joining the Auburn men's squad for next season will be Taylor Copeland, Kyle Darmody, Forrest Davis, Michael Duderstadt, Arthur Mendes, Joe Patching, and Alan Rabstejnek. The women's team will add four swimmers in Madison Martin, Kristen Murslack, Ashley Neidigh and Mary Elizabeth Warhol.
"We're really excited about another exceptional class of athletes for Auburn swimming and diving," Head Coach Brett Hawke said. "All 11 of these young men and women will make for outstanding additions to the Auburn family and will help carry on the tradition of excellence here. With this class, we were able to address some needs in several areas, and we are excited about the immediate impact they will have. Auburn swimming and diving is committed to excellence in the pool, in the classroom and in our student-athletes' everyday lives, and we're grateful to the club and high school coaches that have helped influence and shape these athletes into individuals that will represent Auburn in a positive manner."
One men's swimmer will join the Tigers in January and compete in the spring portion of the 2012-13 season. Arthur Mendes (Vila Velha, Brazil) signed with Auburn earlier in the fall and looks to make an immediate impact on the Tigers' butterfly corps. Mendes was the bronze medalist at the 2011 World Junior Championships in the 100-meter fly and holds the Brazilian junior record in the event. He looks to follow in the footsteps of countrymen Cesar Cielo and Marcelo Chierighini as Brazilians to find immediate success at Auburn.
The Tiger men will get a boost to their backstroke group next fall. Kyle Darmody (Charlotte, N.C.) and Joe Patching (Plymouth, England) are two of the top-rated backstrokers in the 2013 class; Darmody is the No. 4 overall recruit and Patching is ranked 13th overall by CollegeSwimming.com. Darmody competed in multiple events at the 2012 U.S. Olympic Trials, and he also swam for Team USA at the 2012 Junior Pan-Pacific Games. Patching, meanwhile, was the fastest junior backstroker in all of Europe last year, and swam for Great Britain at the European Junior Championships in Serbia.
Four others will add depth to the Tigers in 2013. Taylor Copeland (Richmond, Va.) is another backstroker that ranks as the No. 2 recruit in the state of Virginia. He will be joined by Forrest Davis (Hightstown, N.J.) and Michael Duderstadt (Panama City, Fla.), both 2012 U.S. Olympic Trials participants, and Alan Rabstejnek (Alpharetta, Ga.), one of the top high school swimmers in the state of Georgia.
On the women's side, Auburn brings in Ashley Neidigh (Jacksonville, Fla.), another star from the renowned Bolles program, who could make an immediate impact in the distance freestyle events. Neidigh was a 2012 U.S. Olympic Trials participant, as were fellow signees Madison Martin (Reynoldsburg, Ohio) and Mary Elizabeth Warhol (Yorktown, Va.). Martin was a three-time state champion at Pickerington High School, and Warhol was rated as the No. 3 overall recruit in Virginia. Martin will swim the sprint freestyle and butterfly events, and Warhol will add depth to an already strong backstroke group.
Kristen Murslack (Gibsonia, Pa.) the No. 47 overall prospect in the nation, rounds out the 2013 class. Murslack was a Junior Nationals finalist in 2012 and won a Pennsylvania state title in the 100 breast; her versatility will allow her to swim the breaststroke, butterfly and IM events.
