AUBURN, Ala. - For the third time in four weeks a member of the Auburn swimming and diving team has been honored by the Southeastern Conference for their performance in the pool as senior diver John Santeiu IV has been named the league's Male Diver of the Week following last Saturday's dual meet at LSU.
Freshman Allyx Purcell was named SEC Women's Swimmer of the Week last Tuesday, while Purcell and senior sprinter Marcelo Chierighini were honored by the league on Oct. 15 for their performance at the Notre Dame Tri-Meet. This honor marks the second time Santeiu has been named SEC Men's Diver of the Week and first since 2012.
Santeiu, a three-time All-American, set a personal best in the 3-meter dive with a mark of 400.28 to win the event against LSU by nearly 50 points. Santeiu surpassed his personal best score from the 2013 NCAA Championships (400.05). The victory marked the first of the season for the senior and his 18th career event win.
In last week's dual meet, Santieu also posted a score of 368.25 in the 1-meter dive, a season-best mark after his first appearance of the season at the Notre Dame Tri-Meet on Oct. 12. Against LSU, Santeiu earned 13 points for Auburn to help the Tigers cruise to a 151-win in their first SEC meet of the season.
A native of Dearborn Heights, Mich., Santeiu won the NCAA Zone "B" Diving Championship in the 3-meter dive last season and earned All-SEC first team honors in 2013 by recording his first conference championship in the platform.
The Tigers compete in their annual Orange/Blue Intrasquad Meet this Friday at 4 p.m. inside the Martin Aquatics Center. The event benefits Swim for MS and will feature 11 events.
