Chierighini was named the SEC Male Swimmer of the Week, while Purcell was named the first SEC Freshman Swimmer of the Week of the young season. Chierighini and Purcell both have some of the fastest times in the nation and won multiple events in their first dual meets of the season.
Chierighini, a native of Sao Paulo, Brazil, swam a 19.93 in the 50 free during action at the Notre Dame Tri-Meet last weekend en route to winning the event. His mark currently ranks first in the nation. He is also currently one of two swimmers in the country with a sub-20 second time in the 50 free this season.
He also swam the second-fastest 100 free (44.09) time this season, finishing second at the big meet. Overall, the senior tallied a pair of top-two finishes in each event he entered in AU’s first meet of the year (50 free, 100 free, 200 MR, 400 FR).
For Purcell, she won five events (three individual) against Vanderbilt and the Notre Dame Tri-Meet, the first two meets of her collegiate career. Her 50 free time of 22.87 during the Notre Dame Tri-Meet ranks fourth in the nation, while her 100 free time (50.30) is seventh-best in the country and second-fastest among freshmen nationally. Purcell has been a major part of Auburn’s 3-0 start to the season with two dual wins over ranked opponents (No. 13 Indiana, No. 18 Notre Dame).
Auburn will have short rest before its next meet as it will travel to Charlotte, N.C. to take on Queens University on Oct. 25. Both the men and women will make the trip in two weeks as the women will be looking to stay perfect in the dual season. The meet is scheduled to last one day and will start at 4 p.m.
