Former Auburn Olympian Ozzie Quevedo Hired As Swimming Assistant Coach

Sept. 17, 2013

AUBURN, Ala. - Auburn head swimming and diving coach Brett Hawke has added another Auburn alum and former Olympian to his staff as Ozzie Quevedo has been named as the newest assistant swim coach for the Tigers.

A 2000 graduate of Auburn, Quevedo was a butterfly and freestyle swimmer from the country of Venezuela and was a member of the 1999 national championship team, Auburn's second ever championship team. In his final collegiate year, Quevedo was the third leg of the 200 freestyle relay (1:25.14) that set the U.S. Open and NCAA record at the time, a record that stood for four years.

Quevedo was also a major swimmer on the international level, swimming for his home country from 1987-2004, including in the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia, competing in the 400 free relay and 100 fly.

At the 2000 South American Championships, he won the 50m and 100m butterfly events and then defended the title in the 100m fly in the 2002 edition of the championships. Quevedo is the current masters long-course world record-holder for the 50m fly (24.15) set back in 2009. He also has two Pan-American Games medals in his international award collection.

Before his hire, Quevedo had coached on both the club and high school levels and was the head coach of National Training Center Aquatics in Cleremont, Fla. While coaching for NTCA, he developed multiple senior and junior national qualifiers and also produced numerous swimmers who were ranked nationally in Age Group Swimming. Quevedo also coached the men's and women's varsity programs at Montverde Academy, a college prep school in Montverde, Fla., while at NTCA.

The Auburn women's swimming and diving team will have its first competition Friday, Sept. 27 in Nashville, Tenn., in a dual meet against Vanderbilt. The men will join the women in South Bend, Ind., for the Notre Dame Tri-Meet for their first competition of the year Oct. 11-12.
