AUBURN - Eight current and former Auburn swimmers combined for 14 top-10 finishes last weekend at the Santa Clara Grand Prix with former Tiger Hayley Peirsol headlining the group with two gold medals.
The Santa Clara meet was the fourth stop on the 2007 Toyota Grand Prix Series. The seven-event Toyota Grand Prix Series is intended to provide U.S. National Team members and other elite swimmers with the opportunity to compete at a high level as they prepare for the championship period of the season.
All 34 events in last weekend's meet took place at the Santa Clara International Swim Center in Santa Clara, Calif.
Peirsol (Newport Beach, Calif.) was dominant in her events, winning the 800m free (8:33.27) and the 1500m free (16:12.08). She also finished runner-up in the 400m free (4:12.51) while finishing 12th in the 400m IM with a time of 4:53.16.
Eric Shanteau (Lilburn, Ga.) led the Auburn representation on the men's side with a pair of runner-up finishes. He took second in the 400m IM with a time of 4:23.23, following it up with another second-place finish in the 200m breast (2:13.73).
Shanteau also finished fourth in the 200m IM (2:02.84) and 21st in the 200m back (2:07.84).
Six other Tiger swimmers also competed in the four-day meet. Kara Denby (Simi Valley, Calif.) advanced to the finals in the 100m free, 100m breast and 50m free with a 10th-place finish in the 50m free (26.19) highlighting her weekend.
Emily Kukors (Auburn, Wash.) posted three top-10 finishes in the four events that she qualified for. She finished sixth overall in the 200m free and 200m fly, posting times of 2:01.90 and 2:12.56, respectively. She also finished seventh in the 400m free (4:15.41).
Melissa Marik (Naperville, Ill.) rounds out the women as she qualified for three events, posting top-15 finishes in the two backstroke events. She finished ninth (2:18.62) in the 200m back after coming in 12th in the 100m back (1:03.75).
Alexei Puninski (Croatia) chalked up a pair of top-10 marks in the 100m fly and 100m free. He finished fifth in the butterfly with a time of 54.40, following up with a sixth-place finish in the freestyle (50.49).
Scott Goodrich (Glendale, Ariz.) also posted a top-10 finish, coming in sixth in the 50m free with a time of 22.88.
Bryan Lundquist (Marietta, Ga.) rounds out the men after qualifying for the 50m free and 100m free. He finished 11th overall in the 50m free with a time of 23.52 while coming in 21st in the 100m free with a time of 52.15.
The 2007 Toyota Grand Prix Series will continue with the Janet Evans Invitational in Los Angeles, Calif., July 12-15, 2007.
