OMAHA, Neb. - Seven current and former Auburn swimmers advanced in Monday's preliminaries at the 2008 Olympic Swimming Team Trials at the Qwest Center in Omaha, Neb. The big event of the session for Auburn was the women's 100m backstroke as four Tigers advanced to the semifinals after finishing in the top 16.
Margaret Hoelzer, Margo McCawley, Emile Ewing, Erica Meissner, James Wike, Doug Van Wie and Maggie Bird led the pack of 21 current, former and future Auburn swimmers that competed in Monday's events.
Hoelzer, a 2004 Olympian, advanced to her second semifinal of the meet after taking third in the 100m backstroke preliminary with a time of 1:00.86. Current Tigers McCawley, Ewing and Meissner also advanced to the semifinal. McCawley finished 12th in the prelim with a 1:02.08, followed by Ewing in 15th (1:02.30) and Meissner in 16th (1:02.31).
Meissner, who just finished her freshman season at Auburn, was the surprise of the event as she improved her personal-best time by more than 2.5 seconds, taking 16th in the preliminary after entering as the No. 115 seed.
Also competing for Auburn in the women's 100m back were Julianne McLane (20th, 1:02.50) and Melissa Marik (53rd, 1:03.53).
The excitement in the women's 100m back was definitely at the top as Hayley McGregory broke Natalie Coughlin's world record in the next-to-last heat with a time of 59.15. Coughlin, however, answered in the final heat with a 59.03 to take back her world record.
Continuing with the backstroke trend, former Auburn swimmers Wike and Van Wie advanced to the men's 100m back semifinals after finishing 14th and 16th, respectively, in the preliminary.
Also competing in the men's 100m back were Kohlton Norys (20th, 55.78), Auburn signee Max Murphy (44th, 57.11) and Scott Goodrich (50th, 57.22).
In the final event of the morning session, it was Bird dropping more than five seconds off her personal-best in the women's 400m freestyle to earn a spot in tonight's final. Bird finished seventh in the preliminary, earning one of the eight finals spots with her 4:09.73.
Also swimming in the 400m free were Chelsea Haser (52nd, 4:19.21) and Micah Martindale (4:21.29).
Auburn also had swimmers in the two other events of the morning program.
Joey Schneider, Van Wie and Will Dove all finished in the top 40 in the 200m freestyle. Schneider was the top Tiger as he came in 22nd with a 1:49.42, followed by Van Wie in 25th after clocking a 1:49.64. Dove rounded out the trio by finishing 39th with a 1:51.18.
Melanie Roberts, who just completed her freshman year at Auburn, finished less than half a second out of the top 16 in the women's 100m breaststroke, finishing 19th with a time of 1:10.16. Also swimming in the 100m breast were Abby MacGregor (31st, 1:10.87), former Tiger Julie Stupp (54th, 1:11.90) and Kara Denby (65th, 1:12.28).
Action in the Olympic Trials continues tonight at 7 p.m. CT on the USA Network. On the program are finals in the women's 100m fly, men's 100m breast and women's 400m free. Three Tigers will be competing for Olympic Team spots in the finals as Mark Gangloff and Eric Shanteau are slated in the 100m breast final and Bird is in the 400m free final.
Also on tap are semifinals in the women's 100m back, men's 200m free, women's 100m breast and men's 100m back.
