AUBURN - A contingent of more than 44 current, former and future Auburn swimmers have made their way to Omaha, Neb., in order to live out a dream and vie for a spot on the 2008 United States Olympic Team as the swimming trials get underway starting on Sunday, June 29.

The trials, which are being held at the Qwest Center and run through Sunday, July 6, will be a showcase of the top US talent, all chasing Olympic dreams as a total of 1,228 athletes will be competing.

Emily Kukors and Ava Ohlgren will swim the most events of any Tiger at the Trials. Kukors is entered in the 100m butterfly, 400m freestyle, 200m freestyle, 200m individual medley, 200m butterfly and 100m freestyle. Ohlgren is slated to swim the 400m individual medley, 200m freestyle, 200m individual medley, 200m butterfly, 100m freestyle and the 50m freestyle.

Former Tiger and 2004 Olympian Margaret Hoelzer is the only Tiger to enter any event with a top seed as the American record holder will be the one to beat in the 200m backstroke. She is also the No. 3 seed in the 100m backstroke and the No. 8 seed in the 100m butterfly.

Among the men, former Tiger Eric Shanteau leads the way as he enters the meet with top-seven seeds in four events. He is the No. 2 overall seed in the 200m breaststroke, the No. 3 seed in the 200m IM, No. 6 in the 400m IM and the No. 7 seed in the 100m breaststroke.

Other current and former Auburn athletes with top-10 seedings are: Mark Gangloff (100m breast), Scott Goodrich (50m free), Emily Kukors (200m fly, 200m IM), Robert Looney (200m fly), Abby MacGregor (200m breast), Tyler McGill (100m fly), Ava Ohlgren (200m fly, 200m IM, 400m IM) and Jon Roberts (100m breast).

To make the team, swimmers have to finish in the top two of their respective event or be among the top four in the 100m free and 200m free as those spots are used to fill out relay teams. If a swimmer declines a spot in a particular event, the preference then goes to the next highest finisher. Each team will have a maximum of 26 swimmers.

Last time at the Olympic Trials, in Long Beach, Calif., Auburn placed three swimmers on the 2004 Olympic swimming team. Mark Gangloff, Margaret Hoelzer and Bryce Hunt all earned their way to the 2004 Athens Olympics with Gangloff returning with a gold medal as part of the victorious 400m medley relay team.

The Tigers already have eight swimmers qualified for the Olympics: Fred Bousquet (France), George Bovell (Trinidad & Tobago), Cesar Cielo (Brazil), Kirsty Coventry (Zimbabwe), Alana Dillette (Bahamas), Jeremy Knowles (Bahamas), Alexei Puninski (Croatia) and Matt Tartett (Australia). Current Auburn assistant coach and two-time Australian Olympian Brett Hawke will be making his third trip to the Olympics as he was selected to the Brazilian coaching staff for the 2008 Games.

In addition, three future Auburn swimmers have already been named to Olympic teams. Incoming freshmen Arianna Vanderpool-Wallace (Bahamas) and Adam Brown (Great Britain), along with junior college transfer Gideon Louw (South Africa) have already punched their tickets to Beijing.

NBC Sports, the exclusive rightsholder in the United States to the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, will broadcast the finals session live each night from Omaha, Neb. Broadcasts begin each evening at 7 p.m. CT with Auburn alum Rowdy Gaines providing commentary alongside Bob Costas, Dan Hicks and Andrea Kremer.

Broadcasts on Sunday, June 29; Friday, July 4; Saturday, July 5; and Sunday, July 6 will all be live on NBC. The broadcasts from Monday, June 30 - Thursday, July 3 can be found on the USA Network.
