Auburn, Ala. - The Toyota Grand Prix continues this week as 10 current and former Auburn swimmers hit the pool at the Santa Clara Grand Prix.
Action in the four-day meet is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. on Thursday, June 28 with the distance events. The Santa Clara Grand Prix goes through Sunday with preliminaries beginning at 9 a.m. PDT each day and finals at 5 p.m. PDT.
Hayley Peirsol (Newport Beach, Calif.) who was a senior on the Auburn women's swim team that won the 2007 NCAA Championship comes into the event as one of the top distance swimmers in the country and headlines the list of 10 current and former Tigers that will be competing in 22 events this week.
The Santa Clara meet is the fourth stop on the 2007 Toyota Grand Prix Series. The seven-event Toyota Grand Prix Series is intended to provide U.S. National Team members and other elite swimmers with the opportunity to compete at a high level as they prepare for the championship period of the season.
All 34 events in this week's meet will take place at the Santa Clara International Swim Center in Santa Clara, Calif.
Peirsol enters the Santa Clara Grand Prix as the top qualifier in three of the four events she is competing. She leads the way in the 1500m free with a time of 15:57.36 that she made at last year's Pan Pacific Championships, making her only the third woman ever to break the 16-minute mark.
She is also the top qualifier in the 400m free (4:06.31) and the 800m free (8:26.41) and will also swim in the 400m IM.
Eric Shanteau (Lilburn, Ga.), a 2006 Auburn graduate that was a part of four national championship teams is the only other Tiger to enter the meet with a top-three seeding.
He comes in as the second overall seed in the 400m IM (4:14.33) and the third overall seed in the 200m IM (1:58.05). Shanteau will also be competing in the 100m breast, 100m fly, 200m back and the 200m breast.
