AUBURN - Nine swimmers with Auburn ties are set to compete this week at the Phillips 66 USA Swimming National Championships in Indianapolis, which will also serve as the selection meet for the 2013 FINA World Championships.
The meet runs Tuesday-Saturday at the IUPUI Natatorium in Indianapolis, which was also the site of the 2013 NCAA Swimming & Diving Championships.
Four current Auburn swimmers - rising seniors Olivia Scott, Haley Krakoski and Zane Grothe, and rising sophomore Jillian Vitarius - are scheduled to compete. Incoming freshman Kyle Darmody is also entered in the meet.
In addition, four former Tigers, including three former Olympians, are scheduled to compete. London 2012 gold medalist Tyler McGill is the top seed in the 50- and 100-meter butterfly. Two-time gold medalist Mark Gangloff will swim the breaststroke events, as will 2013 graduate Micah Lawrence. And Karl Krug, a 2012 Auburn graduate, is entered in the sprint freestyle events.
Nearly 500 of the nation's top swimmers are expected to compete in the five-day meet. The meet is the sole qualifier for the United States swim team at the FINA World Championships, which run July 28-Aug. 4 in Barcelona, Spain. The top two finishers in each Olympic event will claim a spot on the Team USA roster.
NBC, NBC Sports Network and Universal Sports will provide television coverage of the event. Universal will carry live coverage of the finals sessions on Tuesday and Wednesday, June 25-26, while NBC and NBC Sports Network will carry a recap show on Saturday. In addition, USA Swimming will offer a live webcast of the entire meet at usaswimming.org/nationals.
