AUBURN - Three Auburn swimmers posted top-20 finishes Thursday at the Charlotte UltraSwim with Jeff Smith highlighting the day, coming in runner-up in the 1500m freestyle.
The Charlotte UltraSwim is the fourth stop on the 2007 Toyota Grand Prix Series. The seven-event Toyota Grand Prix Series is intended to provide U.S. National Team members and other elite swimmers with the opportunity to compete at a high level as they prepare for the championship period of the season.
The four-day meet, taking place at the Mecklenburg Aquatic Center in Charlotte, N.C., opened Thursday with the women's 800m freestyle and the men's 1500m freestyle.
Smith was the top performer among the three Auburn swimmers in action as he finished second in the 1500m free with a time of 16:13.07, finishing behind Georgia's Sebastien Rouault.
Maggie Bird was the top Tiger in the 800m free, finishing 11th with a time of 9:07.55. Not far behind her was Auburn teammate Blakeley Bunch, coming in 16th with a time of 9:15.31.
North Carolina's Whitney Sprague came out on top in the 800m free, finishing in 8:45.62.
Action in the Charlotte UltraSwim is set to resume at 9 a.m., Friday with prelims in the 200m free, 100m breast, 100m fly and the 400m IM. Finals will take place at 6 p.m.
