Mazzaferro And Meissner Honored At SEC Awards Banquet

DESTIN, Fla. - Auburn University's Dan Mazzaferro and Erica Meissner, members of the Tigers' men's and women's swimming and diving teams, were recognized Thursday night at the annual awards banquet at the Southeastern Conference's Spring Meetings in Destin, Fla.

Mazzaferro, a native of Cheshire, Conn., earned a B.S. degree in Chemistry in May 2010 and will earn his M.B.A. degree in December 2011. He won the McWhorter Award as the top male student-athlete in the SEC and was named a finalist for the NCAA's Walter Byers Award. He is a four-time Auburn Academic Top Tiger and a three-time SEC Academic Honor Roll honoree.

In the recently-concluded season, he served as captain of Auburn's swimming and diving team. He was the 2011 SEC champion in the 3-meter and platform diving events, a nine-time All-American and a U.S. Olympic diving finalist. Dan also won the 2011 SEC Commissioner's Cup as the highest scorer at the SEC Championships and was the 2011 SEC Swimming and Diving Scholar-Athlete of the Year.

A two-time SEC Diver of the Year, Mazzaferro was also a member of the College Swimming Coaches Association of America Scholar All-American Team (2007-09). He is also a two-time Capital One Academic All-District IV First Team selection.

Meissner, a native of Ashburnham, Mass., will earn a B.A. degree in Anthropology in May 2011. She won the McWhorter Award as the top female student-athlete in the SEC and was named a finalist for the Rhodes Scholarship. She is also a three-time SEC Academic Honor Roll honoree and was named to the Capital One Academic All-District IV First Team.

She earned All-America honors in 2008 and is a two-time College Swimming Coaches Association of America Scholar All-American as well as a four-time Auburn Top Tiger, awarded to Auburn's top student-athletes. She had Auburn's second best time this season in the 200 backstroke and the 200 individual medley.

 

 

Their awards were presented to their parents, Thomas and Cyntia Mazzaferro and Walt and Rosemarie Meissner, as both are currently participating in internships in Europe.
